This term we have been reading the novel Onion Tears by Diana Kidd. The story has been very interesting and is about a girl around our own age. She came to live in Australia from Vietnam. We have also been looking at the concepts of different cultures, being different and having lost people that are important to us. Soon we will upload some videos that will be interviews about what we have been learning and what we have learnt from this novel study.

I think it was sad at the start how Danny made a mean song about Nam but then everything was happy in the end of the story.

Students are commenting on what they liked or disliked about the story. Many would have enjoyed a different ending. We may get to hear about that at a later date. Today's task is to plan interviews with each other about the novel.

My favorite part is where Nam-Houng start 's to talk because she hardly talks in the book. I also wanted a better ending because I wanted to know what happened to her parents.

The ending was a bit disappointing because we didn't get to learn about her parents, brothers and sisters.

Yes I agree I really want to know what happened to her mum and dad and sisters like if they all found each other and lived happily after again.

I liked the book because we got to learn about the different celebrations, but I still think the book would have been a bit better if we got to know what happened to Nam-Huong's (the girl's) parents.

I liked the whole book because it was exciting and I wanted to read more when it was time up. My favourite part was when Nam Huong told Miss Lily about what had happened to her parents and then her class mates were nice to her.

I agree the only thing I didn't like was that we didn't get to find out what happened to her mum and dad and I also agree because over all it was a lovely book to read. I am glad that we got to read it during this term, hopefully we get to read it next year. And I want to read another part to the book because we all want to find out want happened to Nam-Huongs mum and dad.

The book was good when she told her friends what her names means but I would of liked to find out what happened to her parents and if she gets to see them.

I would like a better ending to this book because you don't get to find out what happened to her Parents. The reason why i want to find out happened to her Parents is that if her Parents are even alive.

The ending could be better because it doesn't tell you what happened to her family like where did they go and what happens next in the story.

I loved this book because it had great detail. My favourite part was when she wrote the first letter to the little yellow Canary. I was sort of sad at the end of the book because I didn't get to find out what happened to her Mum and Dad. Over all I loved this book, I wish we could read more.

I think this sounds like it was a great novel that the kids really enjoyed. I think that the author, Diana Kidd, should write a sequel to 'Onion Tears', so that everyone can find out what happened to Nam-Houng's parents - everybody deserves a happy ending.

This book introduced a number of complex themes. During reading groups there were discussions on the impacts of war and re-settling to a new country and culture. The children in my group enjoyed exploring these topics.
